Kvaratskhelia out for the season, PSG accelerates search for left winger in January
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture against Barcelona and will miss the rest of the season. PSG, already exploring the market before the injury, will intensify its efforts during the winter transfer window.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, sustained during PSG’s 4-2 victory over FC Barcelona on Tuesday evening. The Georgian winger, a key architect of the club’s second UEFA Champions League title won last spring, will be sidelined for several months and will almost certainly miss the remainder of the season.
The blow is enormous for Luis Enrique, who loses one of his most incisive attacking weapons at a time when the Paris club is confirming its status as European favourite. Internally, the message emphasizes collective solidarity: several players are being called upon to fill in on the left flank.
Mika Godts, the Belgian recruited last summer from Ajax, represents the most obvious natural replacement. Still in his adaptation phase, he has nonetheless shown real quality in his early appearances. Maghnes Akliouche, who arrived from Monaco this summer, represents another serious option: appreciated by his manager for his technique and versatility, he can play on either flank of the attack as well as in midfield. Désiré Doué, also capable of taking on greater responsibility, completes this pool. The Paris academy will also be called upon, with Senny Mayulu and Quentin Ndjantou on the staff’s radar.
These internal resources could, however, prove insufficient to meet the demands of the UEFA Champions League. This is why PSG should intensify its efforts during the winter transfer window. According to L’Équipe, the Paris management was already exploring the market before Kvaratskhelia’s injury, with the ambition of recruiting a young left winger with very high potential in January.
Far from halting this project, the Georgian’s injury will only accelerate its execution. Luis Campos now has additional justification to convince a targeted profile to join the capital. The question that remains open: which specific player will the Paris sporting director settle on?
