Flares at Bruges: RC Lens faces double UEFA sanction after heavy defeat
Beaten 3-0 by Club Bruges in the Champions League, RC Lens's evening turned to disaster: flares thrown onto the pitch by their supporters interrupted the match, exposing the club to an increased fine and closure of their away section in Leipzig.
RC Lens suffered a double blow on Wednesday evening at the Jan-Breydel stadium: a 3-0 defeat to Club Bruges in the third matchday of the Champions League, and incidents in their away section that place the Artois club under threat of severe UEFA disciplinary sanctions.
At the half-hour mark, approximately 1,500 Lens supporters lit flares before throwing them directly onto the pitch. The referee was forced to briefly interrupt the match, with intervention from security services and a call for calm broadcast by the stadium announcer proving necessary to restore order. The match had been classified as high-risk by Belgian authorities, due to regional rivalries exacerbated by links between Bruges and Lille supporters.
The situation is all the more serious as Lens was already under a two-year probationary period. On the first matchday of the Champions League against Slavia Prague, UEFA had imposed a 15,000 euro fine on the club coupled with a suspended closure of their away section. By reoffending just weeks later, the supporters automatically triggered the lifting of this suspension.
All events were recorded in the report of UEFA delegates, significantly aggravating the case. With European authorities tolerating neither the use of pyrotechnics nor the interruption of their matches, the opening of a new disciplinary case is certain.
RC Lens now faces a double sanction. Financially, a fine well above the initial 15,000 euros is expected, increased by the damage linked to the temporary suspension of the match. Sportively, the revocation of the suspension will result in closure of the away section for the next European away trip to Leipzig. Depending on the severity of UEFA’s control commission in response to this early reoffence, the sanction could even be extended to the away trip to Anfield Road to face Liverpool.
