Konsa released from England duty early to deepen Arsenal's defensive crisis
Ezri Konsa has been sent back to Arsenal as a precaution after pulling out of England's UEFA Nations League squad, leaving Mikel Arteta short of central defensive cover with William Saliba already sidelined long-term.
Ezri Konsa has been released from the England squad ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Czechia at Wembley, returning to Arsenal for further assessment in what the Football Association described as a precautionary measure. The decision compounds an already fragile defensive situation at the Emirates Stadium, where William Saliba remains sidelined with a long-term back injury.
The FA confirmed the update in an official statement, noting that Thomas Tuchel will continue preparations for the final fixture of the international window with a reduced 22-player squad. Alex Scott was also ruled out of the same fixture.
Konsa, who joined Arsenal in a £51 million summer move from Aston Villa, had been managing his physical condition throughout the international break on an individual training plan. Despite missing occasional group sessions, he was able to complete 90 minutes in England’s 7-0 win away in Croatia last week. Medical staff ultimately decided against risking him for the Czechia game, with the release understood to be aimed at preventing a minor issue from escalating rather than treating a significant problem.
The timing is nevertheless awkward for Mikel Arteta. Konsa was signed specifically to provide defensive reinforcement in the wake of Saliba’s injury, and has stepped straight into the starting lineup alongside Gabriel Magalhães. With Saliba facing an extended absence, any setback to Konsa — however minor — leaves Arsenal with limited options at centre-back.
Arsenal host Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime when domestic football resumes, before a demanding run of Premier League and Champions League fixtures. Arteta will be hoping for swift reassurance from the club’s medical staff before that fixture.
