Knee Contusion for Gavi, Barcelona Relieved After Elche Scare
Gavi limped off before half-time during Barcelona's emphatic 5-0 victory over Elche in La Liga on Sunday. Medical examinations on Monday ruled out serious injury: the 22-year-old midfielder is suffering from a simple right knee contusion.
Gavi is suffering only from a right knee contusion, FC Barcelona confirmed on Monday, the day after the 5-0 victory over Elche in La Liga’s opening round. The Spanish international left the pitch limping in the 44th minute, replaced by Pedri, after receiving a heavy tackle from Marc Aguado.
The incident immediately revived fears about the same knee that had sidelined Gavi for nearly seven months the previous season. Medical examinations conducted in the morning dispelled these concerns: the Catalan club stated in its official statement that “it was a simple contusion” and that “his return to training is expected soon”.
Uncertainty remains, however, regarding his availability for Barcelona’s next match on Thursday against Athletic Bilbao. Should Gavi miss that encounter, Hansi Flick could call upon Rodri as a replacement: the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner took part in the full collective training session on Monday and appears fit to play.
