Klopp agrees with DFB to succeed Nagelsmann as Germany head coach
Two years after leaving Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp is set to become Germany's national team manager. The DFB announced that an agreement has been reached on the essential points of the contract, subject to Red Bull's approval.
Jürgen Klopp is set to return to the touchline. The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Saturday that an agreement had been reached with the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager on the essential points of a potential contract to take charge of the Mannschaft.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke met with Klopp on Friday in New York for an initial in-depth discussion. In their statement, the two officials said they were “confident about the positive conclusion of negotiations,” while clarifying that the finalization of the contract remains subject to the agreement of Red Bull, Klopp’s current employer, who has held the position of global football director within the Austrian group since summer 2024. A joint meeting of the DFB’s supervisory board and general assembly of shareholders will also need to ratify the agreement.
The position has been vacant since Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, which came after Germany’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Paraguay (1-1, 3-4 on penalties). Despite finishing top of Group E in the first round, the Mannschaft suffered a premature exit that led to the departure of the incumbent manager.
Klopp has not managed a team since leaving Liverpool in summer 2024, marking nearly two years away from the pitch. He will inherit a significant project: the German national team has been going through turbulent times for several years and is seeking a new project capable of restoring consistency on the international stage. Discussions between the two parties will continue next week.
