Deschamps Severely Reprimands Player for Repeated Lateness Before Spain Semifinal
Two days before facing Spain in the 2026 World Cup semifinal, Didier Deschamps firmly disciplined a player guilty of a second late arrival to the team bus, according to L'Équipe. The Blues, unbeaten in six matches, are targeting a third consecutive final.
Didier Deschamps did not let the offense slide: according to L’Équipe, a France player was severely reprimanded by the manager after arriving late to the team bus for a second time during this 2026 World Cup. The message was unambiguous — a third breach would not be tolerated.
The incident comes days before a crucial semifinal against Spain, scheduled for Tuesday, July 14 in Dallas. The Blues, who have won all six matches since the start of the competition, are one victory away from a third consecutive final, following their triumph in 2018 and their penalty shootout defeat in 2022.
This reprimand illustrates the evolution of Deschamps’ management style, which he himself acknowledges has adapted over the years. “I will never compromise on the working and living framework, even if it has broadened with the new generation,” he recently stated. Closer to his players than at the start of his tenure in 2012, the manager nonetheless remains committed to unwavering discipline.
The expansion of the competition to 48 teams has also led the French staff to integrate more phases of physical and mental recovery into the schedule. Deschamps also relies on his captain Kylian Mbappé to relay the collective demands of the group, while maintaining control over fundamental decisions.
A victory against Spain on July 14 would send the Blues to the final and could constitute the penultimate match of Deschamps’ tenure as manager, whose mandate runs until the end of the tournament.
