Jayden Adams, South African international midfielder, has died at the age of 25, just days after Bafana Bafana’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. According to numerous media reports, he was found dead in a hotel in Cape Town. The exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.
A player for Mamelodi Sundowns, Adams had actively participated in South Africa’s World Cup campaign. He started in the opening match against Mexico and was also in the starting lineup against the Czech Republic, before coming on as a substitute in the victory over South Korea. He remained on the bench during the round of 16 defeat to Canada (0-1), which ended Bafana Bafana’s tournament run.
Tributes poured in following the announcement of his death. The South African Footballers’ Union (SAFPU) said it was “devastated by the sudden passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder,” adding: “Death has cruelly taken one of our own. It deprives our nation of an exceptional footballer, but can never erase the legacy that Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will always remember his humility and extraordinary talent.”
Less than twenty-four hours before the announcement of his death, Adams had posted a photo on social media with his partner.
