Kieran Tierney once confronted Martin Odegaard directly about his wages after learning the Norwegian was earning around £4 million a year following his permanent £30 million move from Real Madrid to Arsenal in 2021 — and the exchange was caught on camera.

The moment came in the opening episode of the Amazon docuseries All or Nothing: Arsenal, when Tierney turned to his then-team-mate and said: “Happy to be back bro? I heard what wages you were on so I thought, ‘F** hell.’” The candid exchange quickly became one of the more memorable scenes from the series.

Odegaard had initially arrived at the Emirates Stadium on loan before Arsenal made his signing permanent. He wasted little time justifying the fee, helping Mikel Arteta reshape the club into genuine Premier League title contenders. After his first full campaign, Odegaard was handed the captaincy, succeeding Alexandre Lacazette as skipper.

His most productive league season in north London followed, with 15 goals and seven assists. Arsenal rewarded him with a new long-term contract in 2023, and according to Spotrac, his annual earnings have since risen to £12.48 million — a significant step up from the figure that once left Tierney speechless.

Odegaard has now made 234 appearances for the club, contributing 42 goals and 46 assists. Last season he lifted the Premier League trophy, ending Arsenal’s 22-year wait for a league title. Reports linking him with a move to Galatasaray have been dismissed, with the captain understood to be settled at the club.

His attention has now turned to international duty. Norway face England in a World Cup quarter-final — the deepest run in the nation’s history — after a 2-1 victory over Brazil in the previous round. Odegaard captained the side and was central to the win, his performance drawing a frustrated foul from Neymar, who received a yellow card during the contest. The two players were seen embracing after the final whistle.
