Keane credits United's recruitment but warns defence remains their biggest weakness
Roy Keane has backed Manchester United's decision to walk away from deals for Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson, but the club legend says the defence is still the major concern heading into the new Premier League season.
Roy Keane has praised Manchester United’s summer recruitment approach while identifying their defence as the most pressing problem ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the United legend acknowledged the club’s shift toward signing players already familiar with English football, but stopped short of suggesting the squad is ready to challenge for the title. “We have to give United credit for a little bit,” Keane said. “The recent recruitment, they have come back to players who know the Premier League. It’s not always necessarily about spending £100m on somebody. I think these players will be good for Man United, but being good and trying to win a league title… I think that defence is the big problem.”
United have added midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to Michael Carrick’s squad this summer, with the arrivals coming in the wake of Casemiro’s free transfer exit and a serious World Cup injury to Manuel Ugarte that has left the club short in central midfield. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also closing in on a move to Old Trafford in a deal worth £65 million plus £5 million in add-ons.
Keane also addressed United’s decision to pull out of moves for Fernandes, Tonali and Elliot Anderson — all three of whom completed transfers elsewhere. Fernandes and Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur, while Anderson moved to Manchester City. “I think the rumours are that they were told that the fees were going to keep going up and at some stage you have to back away, don’t you?” Keane said. “They obviously had their fingers burned over the last few years, but again they were buying players who weren’t used to the Premier League.”
The former United captain’s comments reflect a broader shift in the club’s transfer philosophy under Carrick — prioritising Premier League experience over marquee fees — though Keane’s concerns over the backline suggest the rebuild remains a work in progress. United have until 11pm on 1 September to add further reinforcements before the transfer window closes. The new season begins with an away fixture at newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday.
