Kang-in Lee breaks deadlock for Atlético against Malaga, Baena seals the win
Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over promoted Malaga on Wednesday, thanks to a goal from Kang-in Lee in the 70th minute and a free kick from Alex Baena in the 85th. The Colchoneros provisionally climb to the podium in La Liga.
Atlético Madrid snatched a 2-0 victory against promoted Malaga on Wednesday evening in a delayed fixture from the first matchday of La Liga, courtesy of late goals from Kang-in Lee and Alex Baena.
Long silent against a stubborn opponent, the Colchoneros had to wait until the 70th minute to see Kang-in Lee find the breakthrough. The South Korean international, arriving from PSG, returns to Spain after spells at Valencia and Majorca, which ended in 2021 and 2023 respectively. His inspiration was enough to break down the resistance of an ambitious promoted side.
World Cup winner Alex Baena then definitively extinguished any Malaga hopes with a stunning free kick in the 85th minute to seal the 2-0 scoreline. The victory, laboured in execution, nonetheless allows Atlético to provisionally sit on the La Liga podium. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will only begin their campaign this weekend, in the second act of the season.
