Kai Rooney scored four goals as Manchester United’s under-18 side thrashed Burnley 6-0 this week, announcing himself as one of the club’s most exciting youth prospects at a time when the JJ Gabriel impasse shows no sign of resolution.

The son of United and England legend Wayne Rooney, Kai operates differently to his father — preferring the right wing and cutting inside on his left foot — but his clinical finishing against Burnley drew clear comparisons to the family name. The performance came on the back of an earlier appearance at Old Trafford in the FA Youth Cup, which had already generated significant attention.

One moment that caught the eye was Rooney’s celebration after his second goal. He used the same ‘arm across the face and gun finger’ gesture associated with Gabriel, who employed it during his final United appearance in September. Whether it was a deliberate reference is impossible to confirm, but the timing added an extra layer of intrigue given the ongoing situation surrounding his academy teammate.

Gabriel, 16, had been on the verge of a first-team debut earlier this year before abruptly requesting that his registration with the club be cancelled, just a day before he was set to be included in the squad for a Carabao Cup tie against Brighton. That request has not been granted, and the standoff continues.

The teenager has since been training in Spain amid reported interest from Barcelona, but the Spanish club’s sporting director Deco moved swiftly to shut down those links. “There’s nothing to say about this boy,” Deco said. “We are not interested in any player in his situation. I’m not sure what’s happening, and if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that.”

Deco added: “First of all, we need to understand how the situation is before we try to do something. To speak about young, teenage players, it is not our business.”

The situation leaves Gabriel in an uncomfortable limbo — outside any club environment at a critical stage of his development — while United are denied the services of a player widely regarded as one of their most talented youngsters. With no resolution in sight, the club will at least take encouragement from Rooney’s emergence as a ready-made heir to the Carrington production line.
