Portugal’s Joao Pinheiro has been appointed as referee for the World Cup quarter-final between defending champions Argentina and Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium, with kick-off set for 2am UK time on Saturday.

The 38-year-old steps into the biggest game of his career so far, with this assignment marking his first-ever major international tournament and his third match of the current World Cup.

Pinheiro’s two previous outings at this tournament have given observers a clear sense of his officiating style. He oversaw Canada’s 1-0 victory over South Africa before taking charge of Switzerland’s remarkable 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina — a match that turned dramatically late on. Despite not opening the scoring until the 74th minute, the Swiss ran out comfortable winners after Pinheiro showed Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic a straight red card for a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with ten minutes remaining.

Pinheiro will be assisted by fellow Portuguese officials Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia on the lines, while Canadian Drew Fischer has been named as fourth official.

The winner of Saturday’s tie will advance to the semi-finals in Atlanta on July 15, where they will face either England or Norway.
