Courtney Meppen-Walter, Former Manchester City Prospect, Dies at 32

Courtney Meppen-Walter, a defender who came through Manchester City’s academy and former captain of England’s under-18 side, died on Tuesday at the age of 32. The cause of his death has not been made public. Several clubs where he played have confirmed the news and offered their condolences to his family.

In the early 2010s, Meppen-Walter was among the most promising defenders of his generation in England. Trained in Manchester City’s academies, he quickly caught the attention of national team selectors, eventually earning the captain’s armband with the youth squad.

His trajectory changed dramatically in September 2012. At just 18 years old, he caused a car crash in Manchester while driving at excessive speed, colliding with another vehicle. The impact killed two passengers, a brother and sister aged 32 and 37. Sentenced to 16 months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving, he left Manchester City’s academy upon his release in 2013.

Meppen-Walter then attempted to rebuild his career in the lower divisions of English football, signing contracts with Carlisle United, Stockport, Chorley, Glossop North End and Nantwich Town. In 2019, he faced justice again for driving under the influence and received a 22-month driving ban.

Bury, the club in his hometown north of Manchester where he had recently played, was among the first to respond: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Courtney Meppen-Walter, aged 32. All our thoughts and condolences go to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.” The English Football Association (FA) also paid tribute, recalling his time in the national youth teams. Officials at Nantwich Town honoured the memory of an “extraordinary character with an immense heart.”
