Jesus Owono considering quitting football after fatal collision with Jesus de Miguel
Andorra FC goalkeeper Jesus Owono is reportedly weighing up whether to leave football permanently following the death of striker Jesus de Miguel, who suffered accidental chest trauma after the two collided on 2 November.
Andorra FC goalkeeper Jesus Owono is considering retiring from football in the wake of the fatal collision with striker Jesus de Miguel on 2 November, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
De Miguel died in hospital the morning after the incident, having suffered what was described as accidental chest trauma following the collision during the match. Owono, who had rushed out to clear the ball when the two players met, has been left devastated and is currently receiving psychological support from his club.
Ana Maye, a close friend of Owono and general coordinator of the Equatorial Guinea men’s national team, described his state of mind to Mundo Deportivo. “No matter how much we tell him, he’s deeply saddened,” she said. “He’s very affected, especially for Jesús Miguel’s one-and-a-half-year-old son and for his widow. He doesn’t know how to handle all of this.”
Owono had already broken his silence on social media the day after De Miguel’s death. “These are the most difficult days of my life,” he wrote. “I struggle to find the words, and I find it very hard to process what has happened. I feel enormous pain at the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and all the people who loved him.”
He added that he would face any questions that arose “with the utmost respect”, but said he was unable to focus on anything beyond grieving. “Right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus.”
The football world has continued to mourn De Miguel’s death, and the situation surrounding Owono underlines the profound human toll of the tragedy beyond the loss of the striker himself. Whether the goalkeeper ultimately decides to continue playing remains unclear, with those close to him focused for now on his emotional wellbeing.
