Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe head the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings with eight goals apiece as the tournament enters its semi-final stage, with Erling Haaland just one goal behind and the race still wide open.

Messi has scored against Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt across the group stage and knockout rounds, extending his tournament scoring streak to nine consecutive matches. Mbappe has been equally prolific, finding the net against Senegal, Iraq, Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco on his way to matching the Argentine’s tally.

Should the two forwards finish level on goals at the end of the competition, assists serve as the first tiebreaker — and Mbappe currently holds the edge there with three to Messi’s one. If that criterion also fails to separate them, the player who has spent fewer minutes on the field takes the award.

Neither frontrunner can afford to ease off. Norway’s Haaland sits on seven goals, one behind the leaders, while England’s Harry Kane has registered six. France’s Ousmane Dembele remains a threat with five goals to his name.

Mbappe is the defending Golden Boot holder, having claimed the prize at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final. This tournament has pushed both him and Messi into the top two on the all-time World Cup scoring charts, with each surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16 career goals across his World Cup appearances.

Messi currently leads the all-time list with 21 World Cup goals across his career. Mbappe sits second with 20 and has the opportunity to close the gap further in the semi-finals against Spain.
