James Rodríguez retires from Colombia at 35 after 131 caps and 2014 World Cup Golden Boot

James Rodríguez brought his 15-year Colombia career to a close on Tuesday, retiring from international football at 35 with 131 caps and 31 goals to his name. The midfielder confirmed the decision in a video posted to his social media channels, shortly after returning to his home country to sign with Atlético Nacional.

“After many years, matches, moments of joy, and tough times, I feel the moment has come to close a chapter of my life: my journey with the Colombian national team,” Rodríguez said. “Wearing the jersey was a dream, but also an enormous responsibility.”

Rodríguez made his senior debut in October 2011 in a victory over Bolivia in La Paz, but it was the 2014 World Cup in Brazil that defined his international legacy. He scored six goals in five matches to claim the Golden Boot — a performance that earned him a move to Real Madrid, where he spent six seasons and won two La Liga titles. His club career also took him to Bayern Munich and Everton before a series of shorter stints with Olympiakos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, Club León, and Minnesota United in MLS.

On the international stage, Rodríguez appeared at three World Cups — 2014, 2018, and 2026 — matching Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincón for the most tournament appearances by a Colombian player. His final major contribution came at the 2024 Copa América, where he captained Colombia to the final, the country’s first appearance in the title match in 23 years.

“I was fortunate enough to experience moments I never imagined — World Cups, goals, and unforgettable nights; victories that made us believe and defeats that made us stronger,” he said. “I had the honor of wearing the number 10 jersey and the captain’s armband; I tried to do so with respect, responsibility, and an awareness of what Colombia represents.”

Rodríguez signed off with characteristic composure. “I leave with peace of mind because I know I gave absolutely everything; thank you for every memory, every hug, and every moment.”
