James Rodriguez retires from Colombia after 127 caps and Copa America final
At 35, James Rodriguez announced on Tuesday the end of his international career. The playmaker for Atlético Nacional leaves the Colombian national team after 127 caps and 34 goals, including a Copa America final in 2024.
James Rodriguez announced on Tuesday that he is ending his international career at 35, closing the book on 127 caps and 34 goals with Colombia. The playmaker for Atlético Nacional confirmed his decision via social media, the day after the World Cup.
“The moment has come. Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear and every dream shared. Defending the colours of the Colombian national team has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you, Colombia. Forever,” he wrote.
Without a major trophy on his record with the Cafeteros, Rodriguez nonetheless left his mark on the history of the national team through two standout performances. In 2014, he guided Colombia to the quarter-finals of the Brazilian World Cup, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. Ten years later, he led his teammates to the final of Copa America 2024, where Colombia lost to Argentina.
With 127 caps, Rodriguez ranks among the most capped players in Colombian history. His international retirement marks the end of an era for a generation that brought Colombian football to its highest level on the world stage.
