Ivan Barton: the Salvadoran chemistry professor refereeing France vs Spain at the World Cup
El Salvador's Ivan Barton has been appointed to referee the World Cup semi-final between Spain and France in Dallas. The 35-year-old, who holds a degree in chemical sciences, made history at this tournament by becoming the first referee to send off a player for covering their mouth.
Ivan Barton, a 35-year-old referee from El Salvador, will take charge of the World Cup semi-final between Spain and France at Dallas.
Barton is a notable figure beyond the touchlines of football. Born in Santa Ana, El Salvador’s second-largest city, he previously worked as a professor of organic chemistry after earning a degree in chemical sciences — a background that sets him apart from almost every other official at this level.
A regular presence in Concacaf’s biggest tournaments, Barton made his World Cup debut at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. He has continued to build his reputation at this edition, where he has already made history as the first referee to dismiss a player for covering their mouth during a confrontation — sending off Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón in their group-stage match against Turkey. He also oversaw the round of 16 tie between Colombia and Switzerland.
Barton’s profile extends beyond disciplinary firsts. In 2023, he halted a Concacaf Nations League match between the United States and Mexico early in stoppage time after homophobic chants from fans — a decision that drew widespread attention and underlined his willingness to act decisively in difficult circumstances.
The semi-final appointment represents the most prestigious of his career, with Spain and France meeting to decide the first finalist at this World Cup.
