Greenwood to Fenerbahçe and Ounahi to Ajax: OM could recover up to €50m
Mason Greenwood's transfer to Fenerbahçe (€42m) and Azzedine Ounahi's potential move to Ajax Amsterdam could bring tens of millions of euros to Olympique de Marseille, which is seeking liquidity to finance its summer transfer window.
Olympique de Marseille could pocket up to €50 million this summer thanks to the sales of Mason Greenwood and a potential resale clause on Azzedine Ounahi, two former club players now set to leave.
Greenwood heads to Fenerbahçe for €42m
According to Fabrizio Romano, Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Fenerbahçe is done. The Turkish club will pay €40 million fixed, plus €2 million in bonuses, for a total of €42m. Manchester United, which had negotiated a resale clause when the English winger was sold to Marseille two years ago, will receive more than €10 million from this deal. OM, which had acquired Greenwood for €26 million, is therefore making a modest profit but is cashing in a significant sum to boost its recruitment budget. The player has committed to Fenerbahçe until June 2030 on an annual salary of around €10 million net.
Ounahi to Ajax: up to €7.5m for OM via resale clause
The other good news could come from Azzedine Ounahi. The 26-year-old Moroccan international midfielder, who rose to prominence at the 2022 World Cup, left OM for Girona last summer for €6 million. The Catalan club has just been relegated to Spain’s second division, and Ajax Amsterdam has positioned itself to sign him, according to Romano and Onze Mondial. Negotiations are ongoing, with the Dutch club seeking to lower the release clause set at €25 million.
OM had taken care to include a 30% resale clause in Ounahi’s transfer agreement. If the deal is completed at €25 million, Marseille would receive around €7.5 million more. In total, between the initial transfer (€6m) and this clause, the Phocaean club could recover up to €13.5 million on a player signed for €8 million in January 2023.
A constrained transfer window for Genesio
These incoming funds come at just the right time for OM, which is entering the Bruno Genesio era with reduced financial flexibility. Fifth in Ligue 1 last season, the Marseille club will have to sell before buying, and these two deals represent the first building blocks of a summer transfer window that promises to be more modest than previous ones.
