Investors Withdraw, FC Girondins de Bordeaux on Brink of Liquidation
After the FFF confirmed their relegation to Régional 1, American investment fund Park Bench and Sparta Capital have withdrawn their takeover bid for FCGB, paving the way for judicial liquidation of the club.
FC Girondins de Bordeaux finds itself on the edge of the abyss following the withdrawal on Saturday of American investment fund Park Bench and its partner Sparta Capital, who had made their takeover offer conditional on the club’s participation in the national championships.
The decision by the executive committee of the French Football Federation (FFF) to confirm the relegation to Régional 1 — the sixth national division — handed down in July by the National Management Control Board (DNCG) was the triggering factor. “As we have consistently stated throughout the process, our offer was conditional on the club’s participation in the National Championships,” the investors said in a statement. “Consequently, we will not proceed with the envisaged transaction.”
Park Bench and Sparta Capital justified their withdrawal by the economic impossibility of managing the club at this level while assuming its debts. “It would be extraordinarily difficult for any owner to operate this club in Régional 1 while bearing the existing debt and fully honoring the obligations of the restructuring plan,” their statement said. “To proceed regardless would have been to make promises we could not hold with certainty — and this club has already experienced enough uncertainty.”
Without a buyer, judicial liquidation of FCGB now appears virtually inevitable. This scenario would result in the dissolution of the commercial company that operates the professional team, ending the club as it has existed for decades. A restructuring at the amateur level would be the only alternative to total disappearance, but with no guarantee of retaining the Régional 1 place already secured. The numerous appeals filed throughout the process will not have been enough to change the FFF’s verdict or to retain the investors.
