Inter stunned at home by Bruges, Bayern held by Viking, Barcelona soars to top
Matchday 2 of the Champions League brought two major upsets: Inter Milan lost 3-4 to Club Brugge at San Siro, Bayern Munich drew 3-3 with Viking FK after Olise's red card, while Barcelona thrashed Galatasaray 4-1 to provisionally lead the standings.
Inter Milan suffered a shock home defeat to Club Brugge (3-4) on matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase on Tuesday. Bayern Munich had to settle for a last-gasp point against Norwegian side Viking FK (3-3), while FC Barcelona crushed Galatasaray (1-4) to provisionally top the table.
At San Siro, Inter never managed to get the better of Brugge, who were led by Nicolo Tresoldi, who scored a hat-trick. The Nerazzurri responded each time — Lautaro Martinez scoring twice, Ange Bonny pulling one back late on — but never managed to turn the tide. Final score: 3-4, a painful home defeat.
In Munich, Bayern delivered a catastrophic first half, conceding two goals and showing a disorganized defence. Vincent Kompany reshuffled his back line at half-time, and his team reacted: Harry Kane scored twice to level at 2-2, before Luis Diaz gave Bayern the lead in the 71st minute. But Michael Olise ruined everything: the French winger received two yellow cards in the space of two minutes and was sent off in the 73rd. Down to ten men, Munich conceded a third goal in stoppage time, settling for a 3-3 draw. Viking FK took their first point of the competition; Bayern, fourth in the provisional standings, should drop.
A stark contrast at FC Barcelona. After conceding first and nearly going 2-0 down — a goal ruled out by VAR for offside — the Catalans took control. João Cancelo, Fermin Lopez, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi all found the net for a convincing 4-1 victory. Lamine Yamal, with two assists, was the driving force behind a performance that propels Barcelona to the top of the table.
Among the other results of the evening, Villarreal overturned Napoli (2-1), RB Leipzig snatched a narrow win against PSV Eindhoven (1-0), and Sabah FC beat Slavia Prague (2-0). On the French front, Lille were heavily beaten by Arsenal (3-0) and Lens fell to Sporting (0-2).
