Timber, Eze and Saka seal Arsenal's seven-minute blitz as Lille crumble at the Emirates
Arsenal laboured for an hour before erupting with three goals in seven minutes to beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, extending their perfect Champions League start to two wins from two.
Arsenal turned a stifling stalemate into a commanding 3-0 victory over Lille at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, with Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka all scoring inside a breathless seven-minute spell after the hour mark to keep Mikel Arteta’s side perfect in this season’s Champions League.
For the best part of 60 minutes, Lille frustrated their hosts with disciplined defending and a well-organised press. Bruno Guimaraes side-footed wide from a promising position midway through the first half, Mikel Merino headed a Timber cross straight at goalkeeper Berke Ozer, and the visitors even had a goal disallowed through Ayase Ueda for offside in the 22nd minute. Guimaraes also had penalty appeals waved away by referee Felix Zwayer after going down under a challenge from Alexsandro, with VAR declining to intervene.
The breakthrough finally came shortly after the hour. Noni Madueke — in what proved his final contribution before being substituted — played Timber into space on the left, and the full-back’s first touch was immaculate, allowing him to slip past Lille captain Benjamin André before chipping the onrushing Ozer with a composed finish.
Arteta immediately turned to his bench, introducing Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz. The effect was instant. Saka found Guimaraes’ pass in the right channel and squared for Eze, who had been handed a rare start, to finish coolly three minutes after the opener. Saka then combined with Havertz to score his fourth goal of the campaign in the 71st minute, completing the rout.
The result is Arsenal’s second win from two in the league phase and their ninth in ten across all competitions. It also extends the club’s unbeaten run in the Champions League group and league stage to 14 consecutive matches — a streak that dates back to a 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan in November 2024. Arsenal, who reached the semi-finals last season, are chasing the first Champions League title in their history.
