Hull City, promoted after nine years away, crushes Manchester United on opening day
Back in the Premier League after nine years, Hull City dominated Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday in the opening round, thanks to goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy from set pieces.
Hull City inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Manchester United on the opening day of the Premier League on Saturday, marking the Tigers’ return to the English top flight after nine years away.
The promoted side made the difference in the first half, exploiting two set-piece situations with ruthless efficiency. Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, before Nobel Mendy doubled the lead in the 38th. Hull City then managed comfortably in the second half to preserve their clean sheet.
For Manchester United, this opening defeat to a promoted side represents an immediate warning sign. The Red Devils never managed to trouble a Tigers defence that was inexperienced at this level, and left the KCOM Stadium without finding a way through.
In the next round, Manchester United will host another promoted side, Ipswich Town, with the need to respond. Hull City, meanwhile, will travel to Coventry City as they look to confirm this impressive start.
