Deschamps to Lyon: His Anti-Lyon Reputation Seriously Complicates the Prospect
Mentioned as a candidate to succeed Paulo Fonseca at Olympique Lyonnais, Didier Deschamps carries a persistent reputation for hostility toward the club's players, forged during his years leading the French national team.
Didier Deschamps is now being linked with the head coach position at Olympique Lyonnais, as Paulo Fonseca prepares to join Sporting. While the prospect remains unclear, it immediately raises a question: how could the former France manager lead a club whose players he allegedly systematically overlooked?
During his final years leading the Blues, Deschamps was regularly accused of treating Lyon internationals unfavorably. The cases of Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso are most often cited. Lacazette never managed to establish himself permanently in the national team despite his club performances. Tolisso, meanwhile, was not recalled after his return to Ligue 1, despite showing consistency season after season.
The narrative that took hold among some Lyon supporters is straightforward: you had to leave OL to exist in the eyes of the manager. Examples pile up. Corentin Tolisso received his first call-up in June 2017, weeks before signing for Bayern Munich. Samuel Umtiti joined the Blues in 2016, just before his departure to Barcelona. Rayan Cherki had to wait until May 2025 to be called up — the very summer of his transfer to Manchester City.
These coincidences fuel the anti-Lyon thesis. But a more nuanced reading exists: Deschamps may simply have waited for these players to take a step up by joining a major European club before integrating them into an already highly competitive squad. Bradley Barcola, for example, was called up roughly a year after his arrival at PSG, without anyone seeing any geographical bias.
Still, if Deschamps were to take a seat on the Gerland bench, the question of his relationship with Corentin Tolisso — still at the club — would arise concretely from the first weeks. Reputation, whether founded or not, always precedes the manager.
