Jordan Henderson’s World Cup is effectively over after the Brentford midfielder broke his wrist during England’s post-match celebrations at the Estadio Azteca following their 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16. The 36-year-old slipped while attempting to jump over an advertising hoarding and has since undergone surgery, ruling him out of any further involvement in the tournament.

Henderson had managed just 12 minutes of action across the competition before the injury, with stiff midfield competition limiting his opportunities under Thomas Tuchel. His inclusion in the squad was widely seen as reflecting the leadership and experience he brings to the group rather than his output at club level.

England assistant Anthony Barry was effusive in his praise for Henderson, going as far as tipping the former Liverpool captain for a coaching career once his playing days are done. Speaking to talkSPORT, Barry said: “I see everything in Jordan. I’m so in awe of him as a player, a person and also maybe a future coach.”

Barry continued: “He has it all, he’s the full package, he’s a serial winner as a player and an elite person off the pitch. And when it comes to football IQ, he can really hold court with anyone and the best of them. So the future is bright for Jordan. Maybe one day he takes my seat, kicks me off, and Thomas replaces me. But if I was to be replaced by Jordan, it would be a fantastic pick.”

Henderson is not the only absentee Tuchel must manage as England prepare to face Norway at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday in the quarter-finals. Defender Jarell Quansah was sent off in the second half against Mexico and will serve a two-match suspension, ruling him out until the final at the earliest.

Reece James is expected to be available against Norway after making significant progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury, with Djed Spence also an option at right back. There are also concerns over Marc Guehi, who missed training this week with a minor hamstring problem of his own sustained against Mexico.
