Bounou stops Mbappé and captivates the Blues despite Morocco's defeat
Eliminated 2-0 by France in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals in Boston, Morocco can count on a moral hero: Yassine Bounou, who made a penalty save against Mbappé and was praised by Maignan and Koundé after the final whistle.
France eliminated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday evening in Boston, thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. A clear-cut victory that leaves little room for debate, as the Blues dominated proceedings.
In defeat, one man stood out: Yassine Bounou. The Al-Hilal goalkeeper delivered an outstanding performance, highlighted by a penalty save against Mbappé in the 25th minute. At the final whistle, Dembélé warmly congratulated him, and Mbappé gave him a long embrace.
Mike Maignan, his French counterpart in goal, was full of praise. “Frankly, I’m absolutely not surprised by his level. He’s a top goalkeeper, he’s always delivered in everything he’s done. Before the match, we knew it wouldn’t be easy against him and he proved it again. Big respect to him,” said the French goalkeeper.
Jules Koundé, who spent three seasons with Bounou at FC Séville, echoed those sentiments with even more personal words. “He’s a great goalkeeper, but also a great person. I spent three seasons with him at Séville, he was already a top goalkeeper. And then his journey, everything he’s done in football… he was already 28 when he came to the fore at Séville. But everything he’s done for Morocco, he’s done a lot. He’s a legend, a very great goalkeeper and above all I remember the man. He’s a gem, a huge guy, I wish him all the best,” said the FC Barcelona defender.
Attractive throughout the tournament, the Atlas Lions failed to reproduce their performances against the Blues. Bounou at least saved the honour, turning this quarter-final into an unexpected tribute to one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.
