Manchester City have signed goalkeeper Pierce Charles from League One side Sheffield Wednesday for an initial fee of £3m, with the deal potentially rising to £10m based on performance-related clauses tied to future club success. The 20-year-old, who rejoins City having left the academy at 16, has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium and will immediately head out on loan to Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

Charles began his career in City’s academy alongside his older brother Shea before departing for Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager. Over the past two seasons he established himself in the first team at Hillsborough, making 19 appearances during a turbulent period for the club both on and off the pitch. City monitored his development throughout before moving to bring him back as their third signing of the summer transfer window.

“To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family,” Charles said. “I know first-hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future.”

Despite the long-term contract, the club have been clear that the loan move to QPR forms a deliberate part of Charles’s development plan. “City take the development of young players very seriously so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too,” Charles added. “I’ll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper.”

Director of football Hugo Viana underlined the club’s confidence in the signing. “Pierce is someone whose progress we have been following closely, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City,” Viana said. “Pierce has already learned a lot during his time at Sheffield Wednesday but is still very young and hungry to now further progress and develop. He also knows the club and is very much aligned with the values we all share.”
