Hat-trick on debut: 15-year-old JJ Gabriel dazzles for Manchester United in Youth League rout

JJ Gabriel announced himself on the European stage with a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, helping Manchester United’s Under-19s demolish Sabah FK 5-0 at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday.

The 15-year-old was the standout performer in a commanding opening-group win, with Amir Ibragimov and Jacob Watson also getting on the scoresheet. Gabriel’s treble came despite the Sabah goalkeeper denying him on several occasions, with the youngster adding two late goals to complete the hat-trick.

U21 head coach Adam Lawrence was effusive in his assessment of Gabriel after the final whistle. “He’s obviously a talented lad, and he’s in a great place at the moment and really enjoying his football,” Lawrence said. “You could see that in his performance today. You always feel that he’s a threat in and around the box, and then nice for him to get the couple late on to get the hat-trick.”

Lawrence also reflected on the challenge of coaching a player of Gabriel’s creative instincts, making clear that preserving his natural game is the priority. “The first thing in my job is not to ruin him,” he said. “When you have a talented player like JJ, you obviously don’t want to stifle their freedom and their creativity. What you try and do is set the team up to allow the talent to function and to play free at the right moments.”

The UEFA Youth League runs in parallel with the Champions League, meaning United’s academy side will face the same clubs as Ruben Amorim’s senior squad in Europe’s premier club competition this season.

Gabriel’s rapid development has already seen him integrated into first-team training at Carrington, and there is a growing expectation within the club that a senior debut could follow before the season is out. Lawrence noted that the youngster is embracing the responsibilities that come with that elevated environment — including off-the-ball pressing duties — while retaining the expressive quality that makes him stand out.

“He’s trying to do the right things,” Lawrence added. “It’s enjoyable working with him and challenging as a coach, because the best players challenge you. He is in a real good place.”
