Hamilton and Verstappen reignite rivalry with breathtaking Austrian Grand Prix duel
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen delivered one of the race's standout moments at the Austrian Grand Prix, trading positions in a multi-lap battle that drew widespread praise from fans and reignited memories of their fierce championship rivalry.
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen reminded Formula 1 fans what they have been missing at the Austrian Grand Prix, staging a gripping wheel-to-wheel duel in the race’s opening stint that had social media buzzing long after the chequered flag.
The battle began on lap 8 when Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, ran wide at Turn 1, allowing Verstappen’s Red Bull to close to within a second. By lap 11 the tension had boiled over. Verstappen lunged down the inside at Turn 3 to claim second place, only for Hamilton to immediately respond around the outside of Turn 4 — a sequence that set the tone for everything that followed.
Verstappen pushed again at Turn 6, attempting an outside pass before dipping onto the gravel. The Dutchman argued he had been forced off the track, but stewards confirmed no further investigation was required. The two resumed hostilities on lap 22, with Verstappen diving inside at Turn 3 once more. Hamilton tried to reclaim the position at Turn 4, but this time Verstappen held firm.
The exchange drew an outpouring of appreciation from fans online. “God, I miss these two fighting race after race,” one Reddit user wrote, while another described the contest as “the most beautiful thing I saw today,” adding that a drone shot of the battle only enhanced the spectacle.
“I was smiling throughout. We deserve another Lewis vs Max for the championship,” posted a third commenter. A fourth was equally effusive: “Hamilton and Verstappen are in their own league in terms of racecraft. Absolutely fantastic to watch them.”
Others noted the changed dynamic between the pair, whose 2021 title fight descended into bitter controversy. “It makes me genuinely happy to see them getting along now,” one fan wrote. “It enhances their battles for me because I think they’ll both keep it clean and just be two extraordinary racers.”
The duel offered a tantalising glimpse of what a sustained championship fight between the two might look like — though for that to materialise, Ferrari would need to close the gap to Red Bull that has defined much of the recent era.
