Piastri summoned by Austrian GP stewards over slow reconnaissance laps

Oscar Piastri has been summoned before the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix stewards after allegedly driving unnecessarily slowly during his reconnaissance laps at the Red Bull Ring. The McLaren driver and a team representative must appear before officials at 5:10pm local time to address the matter.
The FIA cited an alleged breach of Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code, specifically “non-compliance with race director’s event note — driving unnecessarily slowly during reconnaissance laps.” It remains unclear precisely how slow Piastri was travelling at the time.
Should he be found guilty, a fine or reprimand is considered the most likely sanction, meaning his fourth-place result is not under threat. Piastri crossed the line behind race winner George Russell, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.
The result itself was a solid recovery drive from Piastri, who had started seventh. He moved past team-mate Lando Norris on the opening lap and worked his way through the field, eventually passing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton — both of whom made an additional pit stop under virtual safety car conditions.
The fourth-place finish moves Piastri up to fourth in the Drivers’ Championship on 80 points, one ahead of both Norris and Leclerc. That standing is particularly notable given that Piastri missed the opening two rounds of the 2026 season.
