Russell's Austrian GP win cuts Antonelli's championship lead to 40 points
George Russell claimed his second victory of the 2026 season at the Austrian Grand Prix, trimming Kimi Antonelli's drivers' championship lead to 40 points. Max Verstappen's runner-up finish was his best result of the year, while Mercedes extended their constructors' advantage to nearly 100 points over Ferrari.
George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg to take 10 points out of Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead, cutting the gap between the Mercedes team-mates to 40 points after eight rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
It was Russell’s second victory of the year and a significant moment in what had been a difficult stretch for the Briton. Antonelli, still the firm championship leader, managed the race carefully to limit the damage and retains a commanding position at the top of the standings.
Russell’s result also sees him reclaim second place in the drivers’ standings from Lewis Hamilton, who drops to third. Behind the leading trio, a four-driver group is tightening up: Max Verstappen finished second at Red Bull’s home race — his best result of the 2026 season — and sits fourth, just ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Further down the order, Pierre Gasly’s run of consecutive points finishes came to an end in Austria, though he remains inside the top ten. His compatriot Isack Hadjar has now moved ahead of him in the standings.
In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes are pulling clear of the field with a lead of almost 100 points over Ferrari. At the other end of the table, Cadillac remain the only team yet to score a point in 2026.
