Haaland quips about his missus as City demolish 10-man Liverpool 5-0 amid FFP verdict fallout
Erling Haaland scored the opener and shared a light-hearted exchange with a pitchside camera operator after Manchester City thrashed Liverpool 5-0 at Anfield, a result that arrived days after an independent commission found City guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring as Manchester City produced a commanding 5-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, with the Norwegian striker capping the afternoon by joking to a pitchside camera operator that he sees them more often than his own partner.
The win arrived in the shadow of a seismic week for City. An independent commission ruled the club guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations across nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. City have lodged a comprehensive appeal, which will be heard by a board convened under the chair of the judicial panel, currently Sir Gary Hickinbottom.
On the pitch, the match turned decisively when referee Chris Kavanagh dismissed Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. Just three minutes later, Haaland struck to put City ahead, and the 10-man hosts never recovered as the visitors ran out 5-0 winners.
Haaland, 26, was substituted with around ten minutes remaining. After the final whistle he returned to the pitch to applaud City supporters in the lower Anfield Road Stand, a camera operator following close behind. When the operator called out to congratulate him on his goal, Haaland recognised them from previous encounters and remarked: “You are everywhere, you.” He then quipped: “I see you more than my missus, I do” — a line that drew a laugh from the operator and a broad grin from the striker as he made his way back to the tunnel.
Haaland paused to greet several City staff members en route, including backup goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and set-piece coach James French.
Off the field, the mood around City is considerably more serious. According to The Independent, some Premier League executives are already exchanging messages about the club’s status in the competition, with one reportedly warning: “This is a farce that will lead to protest, damage to the integrity and reputation of the competition, and possibly even violence. The board has a duty at law to its shareholders to protect, enhance and promote the interests of the Premier League.” Premier League Rule 6B, which governs the board’s powers to act in the league’s best interests, has been cited in those discussions.
City’s appeal process is ongoing, and no sanctions have yet been determined. The club has described its challenge as comprehensive.
