Rooney warns Bruno Fernandes 'explosion' is brewing as Man United's slump deepens
Wayne Rooney believes Bruno Fernandes is showing visible signs of frustration at Manchester United and has warned the captain could publicly vent if the club's poor run continues. Former team-mate Phil Bardsley echoed the concern, saying Fernandes looks "fed up" after years of carrying the side.
Wayne Rooney has warned that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is on the verge of an outburst, saying the Portuguese midfielder is visibly struggling under the weight of another difficult season at Old Trafford. The United legend made the comments alongside former defender Phil Bardsley on The Overlap’s Stick to United podcast.
United have won just twice in eight games across all competitions — once in the Premier League and once in the Champions League against Sabah — and are now on a four-game winless run. Their last two outings ended in draws that flattered the club: a deflected Matheus Cunha strike rescued a point against Fulham, before a stoppage-time Dominic Solanke equaliser allowed 10-man Tottenham Hotspur to snatch a share of the spoils.
Rooney argued that Fernandes has carried too heavy a burden for too long and needs to be relieved of his central responsibilities before the pressure becomes unmanageable. “I genuinely do think he looks, ‘oh, here we go again’,” Rooney said. “There’s only so many times he can do it — he is getting personal recognition, his goals, assists, and he’s carried the team, but you need taking out of that position.”
Rooney went further, suggesting the situation could soon boil over publicly. “You can see it building up — there’s going to be an explosion with him if it keeps building. He’s not scared to come out and voice his opinion, so there will be that explosion if it carries on.”
Tactically, Rooney called for a more secure midfield structure, arguing that a two-man pairing of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo lacks the mobility to protect the back four across the full width of the pitch. “They need help,” he said, suggesting Carlos Baleba as a potential addition to shore up the unit. “You need to be solid, then go and win the game.”
Bardsley was equally blunt in his assessment of Fernandes’s state of mind. “He’s fed up, he looks fed up, he looks tired — he’s carried the team for three, four, five years,” the former full-back said. “He’s probably got to a point now where if he’s having an off day, somebody else needs to step up, and nobody is.”
