FFF promises tribute to Deschamps 'when he is ready' after fourteen years in charge
FFF president Philippe Diallo confirmed that an official tribute will be paid to Didier Deschamps, whose successor Zinédine Zidane has already taken over as France manager. The former head coach, 2018 World Cup winner, first wants to step back.
The French Football Federation has no intention of letting Didier Deschamps leave without paying him tribute. Philippe Diallo, FFF president, confirmed that a ceremony in honour of the former head coach is planned, but on his own terms: “As soon as he is ready, it is natural that a tribute will be paid to him.”
Deschamps stepped down after fourteen years in charge and a World Cup won in 2018, the second star in French football history. His successor, Zinédine Zidane, has already taken centre stage during his first weeks leading the Bleus, recording three wins and a draw in the Nations League, with bold choices and a new playing philosophy.
No tribute was organised during Zidane’s first gathering. Diallo explained the delay by Deschamps’ own wishes: “I spoke with Didier right at the end of the World Cup. His wish was to step back a bit.” The FFF is therefore waiting for his green light.
To justify the recognition owed to “DD”, the federation president recalled the context in which the former France captain took over the national team in 2012. “In 2010, it was the period of shame for French football with Knysna, an elimination in the first round of the World Cup, a France team that no longer embodied the values of unity, respect, hard work”, he said during a visit to Gironde.
“He managed to restore the image, to make people get behind the team and achieve sporting performances. That deserves recognition from French football”, Diallo added. These remarks, however, overlook the work of Laurent Blanc, who managed the Bleus between 2010 and 2012, before Deschamps’ appointment.
Meanwhile, the former head coach has not yet announced what comes next in his career. The question of a new challenge on a club bench or leading another national team remains open.
