Donnarumma confronts Liverpool supporter at Anfield after City's victory
After Liverpool's defeat to Manchester City (0-3), Gianluigi Donnarumma turned back towards the stands to confront a supporter who had called him a « cheat », forcing security to intervene.
Gianluigi Donnarumma lost his composure at Anfield on Saturday, turning back towards the stands to confront a Liverpool supporter who had called him a « cheat » as he headed to the dressing room. Security had to intervene to escort the Italian goalkeeper out of the corridor.
The incident occurred following Manchester City’s emphatic victory over Liverpool (0-3), the Citizens’ eighth consecutive win in the Premier League. Throughout the match, Anfield had reserved a hostile reception for Manchester City’s players, in reference to the legal proceedings facing the club. The stands notably chanted « Cheating bastards, you know what you are » and « You haven’t won a trophy since 1976 ».
It was in this electric atmosphere that an opposing supporter confronted Donnarumma as he left the pitch. The former PSG goalkeeper, visibly irritated, turned around to confront his interlocutor. The exchange was brief, but tense enough to trigger the intervention of security personnel.
The tension surrounding Manchester City extends beyond this match. The club is currently being tried for breaching more than 100 financial fair play rules, with the alleged infractions involving fraud estimated at over one billion euros between 2009 and 2018. Pending the verdict, City remain Premier League leaders with six wins from as many matches.
