Manchester United and Chelsea are set to battle for Sporting CP teenager Flavio Goncalves, with both Premier League clubs having scouted the 19-year-old extensively and now reportedly ready to submit offers directly to the Lisbon club, according to Caught Offside.

Goncalves has made only ten Liga Portugal appearances since his senior debut in October 2025, yet his impact has been swift enough to attract attention across Europe. He has scored three goals in seven league outings this season and has already made his Champions League debut, prompting interest not only from England but also from RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, and unnamed clubs in Spain and Italy.

Sporting are understood to want to extend his contract — which currently runs to the summer of 2030 — and raise his release clause, which presently sits at around £51 million. Any buying club would be expected to meet that figure in full.

“Chelsea and Man United have scouted Goncalves extensively and they’re now prepared to make offers directly to Sporting,” a Caught Offside source said.

The winger’s path to Sporting is an unusual one. Born in northern France to Portuguese parents, he was spotted playing in a six-a-side tournament in Paris by Carlos Rente, an agent who works for the Gestifute agency and is the uncle of Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana. Goncalves subsequently relocated to Portugal with his family, spending three years at Rio Ave’s academy before Sporting signed him at the age of 12 in 2019.

He went on to make 45 appearances for Sporting’s B-team across the second and third tiers of Portuguese football before breaking into the first team. A versatile attacking midfielder, he is equally comfortable in a central creative role or on either flank, and has drawn comparisons to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

For United, the pursuit comes amid a turbulent period on and off the pitch, though transfer planning at the club has continued regardless. At £51 million for a player with fewer than a dozen senior league appearances to his name, signing Goncalves would represent a significant bet on potential — even by the standards of Europe’s biggest spenders.
