United face 'unbreakable' Emery bond as Carrick's seven-game winless run deepens crisis

Manchester United are weighing up potential replacements for under-pressure manager Michael Carrick, but landing Aston Villa's Unai Emery would require breaking a reportedly ironclad bond with co-owner Nassef Sawiris. Eddie Howe is said to be the current favourite.

Manchester United face a significant obstacle in their reported pursuit of Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, with The Telegraph claiming the club would need to not only trigger a release clause but also sever an ‘unbreakable’ relationship between Emery and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris — the man credited with persuading the Spaniard to join four years ago.

The speculation intensifies as Michael Carrick endures a run of seven matches without a win, a sequence that has placed his position under severe scrutiny at Old Trafford. Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como only deepened the pressure, with Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth now framed as a pivotal test for the 45-year-old.

Emery, meanwhile, appears firmly embedded at Villa Park. The Spaniard is reportedly feeling ‘incredibly positive’ about the club’s direction and the squad at his disposal. Villa sit one point ahead of United in the Premier League and are unbeaten in the Champions League so far this season — a stark contrast to the turbulence across the city.

Should United look elsewhere, Eddie Howe has emerged as the leading candidate, reportedly the preference of head of football Jason Wilcox. Howe has been without a club since leaving Newcastle United in July and is said to be open to an immediate return to management.

Head of recruitment Christopher Vivell is also understood to admire Julian Nagelsmann, who has been out of work since departing as Germany head coach. Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler is another name with admirers at Old Trafford, though prising him away from the Amex Stadium could cost in excess of £20 million.

For now, Carrick remains in charge and insists he is determined to arrest the slide. “My responsibility is to get a team on the pitch that represents this football club, represents the supporters and they can be proud of it with the identity that we show,” he said. “We have gone away from that just recently in certain games, which I’m fully aware of and definitely doing something about.”

Bournemouth arrive at Old Trafford in strong form, fresh from a 3-0 win over Ruben Amorim’s ten-man side on Thursday — a result that underlines the scale of the challenge Carrick faces in halting United’s alarming run.
