Mason Greenwood has chosen Fenerbahçe as his next destination, according to Turkish journalist Erdem Akbas. The 24-year-old striker, whose departure from Olympique de Marseille is confirmed, was reportedly convinced by the Istanbul club during a seduction campaign conducted directly in Marseille.

Three clubs were officially in contention to sign the English player: AS Rome, Atlético de Madrid and Fenerbahçe. It was the latter who won the day, notably thanks to the most generous contract offer: a four-year deal, with one year optional, worth €10 million per season excluding bonuses — conditions that reportedly definitively ruled out the Roman and Madrid bids.

OM, which initially hoped for €50 million for the sale of its best attacking asset, should ultimately accept an offer of around €40 million, supplemented by €3 million in bonuses. Forty per cent of this sum will go to Manchester United, Greenwood’s former club, in accordance with resale clauses negotiated when he arrived in Provence.

Time is pressing all parties. Greenwood’s entourage wishes to finalise the transfer before OM departs for a training camp in Ivory Coast, scheduled for next Tuesday. For its part, Fenerbahçe must begin the UEFA Champions League preliminary rounds in around ten days, against Polish side Górnik Zabrze, and wants to register the striker on its UEFA list as soon as possible.

For Marseille, the sale of Greenwood meets a dual constraint: satisfying UEFA’s financial fair play requirements and complying with restrictions imposed by the National Financial Control Authority (DNCG), which recently capped the club’s wage bill and transfer balance.
