Giggs hails Gabriel as 'generational talent' but urges patience for United's 15-year-old

Ryan Giggs has described Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel as a “generational talent” in the mould of Wayne Rooney, while cautioning the 15-year-old to remain patient as excitement builds around a potential record-breaking debut.

Gabriel caught the eye during United’s pre-season, making his first appearance against Atletico Madrid and drawing comparisons to some of the club’s greatest players. He does not turn 16 until October 6, leaving him on course to surpass the record held by goalkeeper David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he made his United debut.

Speaking with former United teammate Rio Ferdinand, Giggs reflected on what Gabriel is already showing at such a young age. Ferdinand had watched the youngster train in Dublin over the summer alongside senior players including Bruno Fernandes, and was struck by the teenager’s composure.

“Off both feet, he’s ridiculous — getting a yard and bang,” Ferdinand said. “So small and slight but doesn’t allow people contact. Imagine being 15 on the training pitch with the PFA Player of the Year, captain of your club, best player at your club — and you and him are the focal point of a shooting drill in front of everybody. And he’s looking comfortable and unfazed.”

Ferdinand added: “Forget his ability, just his mental ability to put the noise out the way. My head would’ve been gone. I remember being called over to the first-team training pitch when I was 17 or 18 and I was like ‘gather yourself, get your thoughts together’ — but he just looked calm, it was unreal.”

Giggs immediately drew the comparison to Rooney: “That sounds like Wayne, doesn’t it? Just give me the ball, give me the ball, I don’t care who I’m training with.”

Despite the glowing assessment, Giggs — who first trained with United’s first team at 15 before making his own debut at 17 — was careful to temper expectations. “Sometimes you have to be patient,” he said. “You need to play games and it’s difficult because if you’re in squads for the first team you’re not going to turn that down, but also you need minutes on the pitch. A couple of times I went up to the first team and then went back to the youth team — and it’s about how you react to that.”

Gabriel has been in impressive form for United’s under-21s, and there is growing pressure on the club to hand him a senior opportunity, with the Carabao Cup cited as a possible avenue for his competitive debut. Whether United move quickly or take the measured approach Giggs advocates, the 15-year-old has already made a significant impression on those who know the club best.
