Real Madrid have enquired about signing Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, according to a report from TEAMtalk, with the Italian’s versatility and form this season drawing serious interest from the Bernabéu.

Calafiori, 24, has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this season, contributing goals and assists from left-back while anchoring what many regard as the best defensive unit in European club football. He was part of the back four that kept a clean sheet as Arsenal won at Anfield for the first time in 14 years, moving the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho is said to consider Calafiori a “dream” signing, having worked with him during his time as Roma manager — deploying him nine times across that spell. Mourinho is understood to value the defender’s ability to operate both at left-back and centrally, a flexibility that makes him an attractive option for a club that signed Marc Cucurella last summer to address the same position.

Arsenal signed Calafiori from Bologna in the summer of 2024, with FourFourTwo understanding that the Gunners moved quickly to beat Real Madrid to his signature at the time, viewing him as a significant upgrade at the back. His contract runs until 2029, giving Arsenal considerable leverage — but with extension talks yet to be concluded, the situation bears monitoring.

FourFourTwo understands that Arsenal intend to address Calafiori’s renewal alongside those of Martin Ødegaard, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice. However, the defender’s injury history complicates the club’s calculations. Since arriving in the Premier League, Calafiori has sustained eight separate injuries, missing 13 matches after Christmas last season and losing his place in the Champions League final starting XI to Piero Hincapié.

The Italian’s resilience is not in question — he recovered from a potentially career-ending knee injury as a teenager before rebuilding his career via a spell in Switzerland — but the frequency of setbacks may factor into Arsenal’s thinking if Real Madrid were to table a significant offer. Transfermarkt currently values Calafiori at €65 million.

Arsenal face Slavia Prague in the Champions League this week, with Calafiori expected to be involved as Mikel Arteta’s side look to maintain momentum on two fronts.
