Valéry Tia, former Ivorian prospect, dies from backward header during amateur match in Normandy
Valéry Tia, 42, a former Ivorian youth international, died on Sunday, November 1st during a veterans' football match in Saint-Vigor-d'Ymonville, near Le Havre, after attempting a backward header that proved fatal.
Valéry Tia, 42, died on Sunday, November 1st during an amateur veterans’ football match in Saint-Vigor-d’Ymonville, Seine-Maritime. The Ivorian, a former youth international for the Elephants, was playing for Saint-Aubin Saint-Vigor against Bréauté-Bretteville when the tragedy occurred before half-time.
Tia attempted to play a backward header, a move his teammates said he particularly enjoyed. He suffered cardio-respiratory arrest on the pitch. Despite rapid intervention by emergency services, he could not be resuscitated.
Matthieu Carreau, the club’s director, gave a chilling explanation to Paris Normandie: “His spinal cord was damaged. He had been with us for ten years. He loved doing backward headers for his striker. I had told him to stop, that he risked a whiplash injury. It’s horrible.”
Arriving at the club in summer 2017, Tia had built deep bonds with the entire association over nine years spent on Normandy pitches. In a message posted on social media, the club paid tribute to someone it considered a full member of its family: “Valéry left us on a football pitch, where he loved to be, where he found his friends, where he lived his passion fully. We lost much more than a player. We lost a member of our family.”
French amateur football is regularly struck by cardiac arrests occurring during matches, but the traumatic mechanism mentioned here — spinal cord damage resulting from a playing action — underscores the brutality that can be inherent in a sport practised every weekend by millions of licensed players. No official information about the precise medical circumstances had been communicated by health authorities at the time of publication.
