Jadon Sancho is edging closer to ending a prolonged spell without a club after La Liga side Getafe made an official approach to sign the England winger, according to Sky in Germany. The 26-year-old has been a free agent since departing Manchester United at the end of last season, when his contract expired without a renewal.

Sancho joined United in 2021 for £73 million from Borussia Dortmund but left Old Trafford without a fee after a turbulent spell that included a public falling-out with then-manager Erik ten Hag. His representatives are now said to be in discussions with Getafe over the terms of a potential deal.

Should the move materialise, Sancho would become the second high-profile signing at the Spanish club following the arrival of former Real Madrid and Spain right-back Dani Carvajal.

The winger had been linked with a return to Borussia Dortmund, but head coach Niko Kovac ruled out that possibility last month. “We’re very well positioned. The squad is already very large. We have 26 outfield players, many of them young. Therefore, we don’t need to concern ourselves with that,” Kovac said.

Italian side Fiorentina were also reported to have held an interest but ultimately declined to pursue a free transfer. Sancho attracted widespread attention earlier this year when he was spotted training at non-league club Flixton FC in England. Club owner Christopher Garcia moved quickly to clarify the situation, stating that Sancho “was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions,” adding that he had simply used their facilities to maintain his fitness.

Garcia praised Sancho’s conduct during the visit, describing him as “nothing but professional, humble, and generous with his time” after the winger met with young supporters and signed autographs following his session.

Getafe, who finished 13th in La Liga last season, would represent an unexpected destination for a player of Sancho’s profile, but the approach signals that the former Dortmund academy graduate may finally be close to securing the fresh start his career has needed.
