Financial Breaches: Marseille Threatened with Points Deduction in Ligue 1
Already struggling on the pitch with six points from six matches, Olympique de Marseille risks conservative sanctions from the DNCG this winter, including a possible points deduction, after failing to meet all its financial commitments.
Olympique de Marseille faces sporting sanctions after failing to meet all its commitments to the Direction nationale du contrôle de gestion (DNCG), according to L’Équipe. The Marseille club, which has only six points after six Ligue 1 matches, now sees its financial fragility threatening its points total.
On June 26, the financial watchdog of French football decided to cap OM’s wage bill and transfer compensation. Constraints that Marseille’s management was required to comply with strictly. Conservative sanctions could be handed down this winter if the situation does not improve.
Several options are on the table. A fine appears difficult to apply given the club’s financial difficulties. Sanctions targeting management are also possible, but the change of leadership that occurred this summer complicates this route. That leaves sporting sanctions: a points deduction for next season is the most likely scenario if OM fails to improve its situation by the end of the financial year. Administrative relegation to Ligue 2 is not, however, on the agenda.
Contacted by L’Équipe, the club highlighted the sacrifices made during the last summer transfer window. “The measures taken were notably reflected in a particularly difficult summer transfer market for OM, marked by the absence of signings and departures designed to significantly reduce the club’s wage bill and meet the regulator’s requirements. The efforts made have been considerable, reflect a real momentum and testify to the club’s determination to continue improving its financial situation,” the club said in a statement.
The central question now remains whether these efforts will be judged sufficient by the DNCG to avoid any sanctions.
