Garnacho benched and stuck at Villa as Emery faces another Elliott-style loan embarrassment

Alejandro Garnacho is facing a frustrating season at Aston Villa after being left out of Unai Emery’s plans, with no exit clause in his loan agreement to offer either party a January escape route.

The Argentine winger joined Villa Park on loan from Chelsea in the summer but has managed just three appearances this season, none of which have come in the last three matches — defeats and wins against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, and Coventry City in the Carabao Cup. Even in the cup tie, where Emery fielded a heavily rotated side, Garnacho did not get off the bench.

According to reports, Chelsea do not hold a January recall clause and Villa are not believed to have an early exit option either, meaning the former Manchester United man is effectively tied to the club until the end of the season. The only route out would require both clubs to mutually agree to terminate the arrangement — a scenario that currently appears unlikely.

The situation has drawn uncomfortable comparisons to Villa’s loan deal for Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott last season, which Emery himself described as “embarrassing for everyone involved.” Elliott, fresh from being named the best player at the U21 European Championship, moved to Villa Park under an agreement that included an obligation to buy for £35 million if he played ten league games. He played just four times, accumulating only 109 minutes of Premier League football.

“My apologies for Harvey Elliott are, every day, in my mind,” Emery said in May as that loan drew to a close. “We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility. How the season has gone has been difficult.”

Garnacho’s lack of minutes has raised fresh questions about Emery’s recruitment instincts. Teenage prospects George Hemmings and Ibrahim Mbaye — a summer arrival from PSG — have both been preferred to the 21-year-old in recent weeks.

The broader pattern is hard to ignore. Despite steering Villa to Europa League glory, Emery’s starting XI for that final contained more players inherited from predecessor Dean Smith than those he signed himself. His track record in the transfer market remains a point of scrutiny, and the Garnacho situation threatens to become another costly lesson in loan deals gone wrong.
