Andy Carroll reveals he was sexually assaulted at home in 2021 in new autobiography

Andy Carroll has revealed he was sexually assaulted by a man who was subsequently convicted and jailed, detailing the attack in his autobiography, Owning It, released on Thursday.

The incident took place at Carroll’s home in 2021, hours after he had played a match for Newcastle United. A man described as a “celebrity mate” of his then-wife, Billi Mucklow, invited himself to their house to watch a boxing match, and Carroll began to feel uncomfortable in his presence.

Carroll wrote that he took himself to bed after “a few drinks”, questioning whether he had been drugged. He later woke to find the man attempting to perform oral sex on him, and threw his attacker out of the house. When the man tried to re-enter, Carroll punched him unconscious before calling the police and, in his own words, “sobbing”.

The attacker denied sexual assault and stood trial. Carroll testified in court, an experience he described as “humiliating and embarrassing and absolutely horrendous”. The man was ultimately found guilty of sexual offences, sentenced to three years in prison, placed on the Sex Offender Register, and banned from entering the village where Carroll lived.

“I’d think about it every day, making it difficult to focus on anything else, including football,” Carroll wrote. “The trauma of what happened to me hasn’t gone away.”

Carroll said he included the account in his book “at the last minute” after a conversation with his girlfriend, Lou Teasdale, and framed the disclosure as a deliberate act of openness. “I was sexually assaulted, there I said it,” he wrote. “Scary to talk about but it’s made the person I am today as much as any of the good stuff. And if me talking about it helps just one person then good it will have been worth it.”

Carroll, 37, now co-owns and plays for National League South club Dagenham and Redbridge, having briefly managed the team last season. He is due to stand trial in January after pleading not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order, having been accused of repeatedly contacting his ex-wife.
