Gabriel Jesus joins Barcelona on cut-price deal after Arsenal ACL nightmare

Gabriel Jesus completed his transfer from Arsenal to Barcelona on Tuesday, signing a three-year contract at Camp Nou in a deal worth up to €15 million, including a sell-on clause, according to ESPN. The 29-year-old Brazilian accepted a substantial salary reduction to make the move happen, confirming the pay cut at his official presentation.

The deal came together rapidly over the preceding weekend after Barcelona failed to sign their primary striker target, Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez. Jesus revealed he had only learned of the club’s interest a week before his unveiling — a timeline that underscored just how quickly negotiations moved once Álvarez was ruled out. He noted that Barcelona had also made concessions of their own, framing the agreement as a negotiation that required movement from both sides.

For Jesus, the move carries personal significance that stretches back to his teenage years at Palmeiras. He acknowledged that a chance to join Barcelona had arisen roughly a decade ago before he instead signed for Manchester City, and that he never expected a second opportunity to materialise at this stage of his career.

His path to Catalonia was shaped by two difficult seasons in north London. Jesus suffered an ACL injury in 2025 that kept him sidelined for close to a year, and upon his return he found himself behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in Mikel Arteta’s striker hierarchy. He insists he is now fully fit and ready to contribute immediately.

Barcelona needed a recognised centre-forward following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres this summer, and Jesus arrives as the only natural No. 9 in Hansi Flick’s first-team squad. He joins an attack that includes Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi.

The fact that he was not Barcelona’s first choice this window does not appear to trouble him. He said the things that genuinely bother him are questions about his character or being kept away from playing football — not being labelled a fallback option. His three-year contract runs through the 2028-29 season.
