Free agent Mahrez in Deportivo La Corogne's sights
Without a club since leaving Al-Ahli, Riyad Mahrez (35) is being targeted by Deportivo La Corogne in the final days of the summer transfer window. However, the deal is hampered by the Algerian international's salary demands.
Riyad Mahrez could return to Europe this summer. According to Spanish journalist Juan Arrien, Deportivo La Corogne is interested in the former Manchester City winger, who has been a free agent since leaving Saudi club Al-Ahli at the end of last season.
The operation looks set to be complex. The salary demands of the 35-year-old Algerian international represent the main obstacle for the Galician club, which returns to La Liga this season after several years away.
Deportivo La Corogne is no stranger to ambitious moves in this summer’s transfer window. The club has already invested €25 million, a sum only surpassed in Spain by FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. Among the recruits is notably Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Mahrez, meanwhile, has yet to find a new club since leaving Saudi Arabia. Several Middle Eastern clubs have also reportedly expressed interest in the former Fennecs captain, but a European option now appears to be emerging.
