Olympique de Marseille decided not to sell Igor Paixao during a board meeting held Tuesday morning, according to Foot Mercato. The decision comes as Sunderland, the main contender for the 25-year-old Brazilian winger, ultimately redirected its recruitment toward another Ligue 1 player.

According to The Athletic, the Black Cats have reached an agreement with OL for the transfer of Malick Fofana, expected in England in the coming hours to finalize the last details. The deal should bring 30 million euros to Lyon, plus 5 to 6 million in bonuses. By turning to the Belgian, Sunderland has effectively removed the pressure weighing on Paixao.

The winger had also been linked with Arsenal, which was seeking a replacement for Gabriel Martinelli. Despite the financial difficulties facing the Phocaean club, which force it to reduce its wage bill, Marseille’s management chose not to sell their player during this winter transfer window.

During the same meeting, the OM board also decided to retain Nayef Aguerd, Quinten Timber and Emerson, three players who were also on the potential departure lists. Decisions that strengthen the squad available to Bruno Genesio for the second half of the season.
