Fernandez impresses on Man City debut as Haaland sinks newly promoted Coventry

Enzo Fernandez announced himself to Manchester City supporters with a composed and influential debut, as Erling Haaland’s first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium.

Fernandez, who joined City from Chelsea in a joint-British record deal worth £125m, was greeted by loud cheers when his name was read out in the starting lineup — a notable reception given the Argentine’s role in England’s painful World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta just 53 days earlier. His new midfield partner, Elliot Anderson, was one of the England players on the receiving end of that defeat and its aftermath. On Saturday, the pair operated in tandem, with Anderson making a beeline for Fernandez after Haaland’s goal.

Fernandez wore the number 17 shirt — the same number Kevin De Bruyne made iconic at the club — and showed little sign of being weighed down by the comparison. Operating in an advanced midfield role at times, he created an early opening for Rayan Cherki, whose shot struck the left-hand post. His influence on the decisive goal was more direct: an arcing pass inside Jay Dasilva released Antoine Semenyou, whose cross was converted by Haaland with the kind of clinical finish that has become routine.

The signing was not universally welcomed by City supporters, with some uneasy about Fernandez’s conduct during and after the World Cup semi-final. But the departure of Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid had left a gap in City’s midfield — not just in quality, but in competitive edge. Silva was widely regarded as one of the game’s more cunning operators, and Fernandez arrives with a similar reputation for gamesmanship alongside his technical ability.

For Coventry, promoted to the Premier League ahead of this season under Frank Lampard, the Etihad was always going to be a stern early test. They offered little going forward and were largely contained by a City side that, while not at full throttle, had enough quality to manage the game without breaking sweat.

Fernandez’s debut will do little to soften feelings among England supporters, but within the blue half of Manchester, the early verdict was clear.
