Fernandez and Cherki spark dangerous new partnership in Man City's win over Coventry

Enzo Fernandez marked his first Manchester City start with a sharp, assured performance alongside Rayan Cherki as City defeated Coventry City in the Premier League, with the two players showing early signs of a potent creative partnership.

Fernandez had managed only two training sessions since joining from Chelsea earlier in the week and had not played since the opening weekend of the season, having been left out of Chelsea’s squad ahead of the transfer. Yet the 25-year-old World Cup winner looked fit and decisive, operating in an advanced midfield role and regularly threatening the Coventry backline before being withdrawn to a standing ovation after 75 minutes.

Cherki, who lasted 65 minutes, was the game’s standout attacking player despite not registering a goal or assist. He struck the post early on and was a persistent danger through his quick footwork, vision and creativity. Every time he received the ball, there was a sense of anticipation in the stadium.

The pair combined to telling effect on several occasions. In the first half, Fernandez played a sharp pass into Cherki, whose shot was blocked, with Fernandez then latching onto the rebound only to see two efforts deflected clear. Later in the half, Fernandez slid the ball into Cherki, who flicked it around the corner for Erling Haaland — only for Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth to produce a smart save to deny the Norwegian.

Manager Enzo Maresca had described Fernandez as a winner at his pre-match press conference on Friday and returned to that theme after the final whistle, pointing to the Argentine’s ability to help City compete at the highest level. Cherki, meanwhile, has been in sensational form since the season began.

The two players shared a hug before kick-off, and if Saturday’s display is any indication, their combination could become one of the more compelling attacking relationships in the Premier League this season.
